One of the most iconic symbols of Lesotho is the Mokorotlo, a traditional straw hat worn by the Basotho people. Now, this symbol of heritage has been reimagined in a unique and exciting way with the launch of Be Nice Authentically (BNA) sneakers.

Designed by a talented Mosotho artist, BNA sneakers feature intricate designs inspired by the Mokorotlo accessory, bringing a piece of Lesotho’s cultural heritage to the world of fashion. The pattern labyrinth’s and vibrant colours have been enticing sneaker lovers and collectors alike, with many embracing the opportunity to showcase pride in their cultural identity through footwear.

Speaking to the Weekly Observer this week, BNA owner Katiso Mosola and his three business partners, explained that their inspiration behind the brand was to create a product that not only celebrates Lesotho’s heritage but also promotes positivity and kindness.

“After realising dissolving African cultures including Basotho’s, we decided to come up with a brand that aligns with what’s happening in the modern world, and bring in the Idea of who we are that reflects our culture. So this brand integrates the modern style with the Mekorotlo representing Qiloane.

The brand is a sign of freedom in who we are no matter where you are in the world lets embrace our culture. Not only is this brand a reflection, but also serves as education of our heritage as you have seen the trending Seanamarena designs,” he explained.

Mosola also went to say that, “the brand is everyone’s pride, as the motto says, Wear your pride, Embrace who you are in the whole universe.”

He also mentioned the struggles he faced with launching the brand back in 2022, including financial challenges, lack of material and small and networking challenges

“At the beginning, finding a network was a challenge. We were only operating online limiting reaching people who are not on social media, however, since the fund awarded to us by Competitiveness and Financial Inclusion funded by the World Bank exceeding M130 000,” he said.

According to Mosala, the financial assistance helped accelerate their sales, so with the money, they will have stock readily available.

Despite the challenges, BNA sneaker line is quickly gaining popularity in Lesotho and beyond, with many customers praising the unique designs and high-quality craftsmanship of the footwear.

Mosala is proud to see his brand making a positive impact in the local community and hopes to continue spreading his message of kindness and authenticity through his products.

“I just urge all people to follow BNA on new updates we have for them including liboko designs, we believe they will love them, we are just at the beginning of this amazing adventure, and let’s all be part of displaying who we are out there.

As the BNA brand continues to grow, Mosala and his partners remain inspired by their cultural heritage and the desire to make a difference in the world. With each pair of sneakers sold, they  hope to spark conversations about the importance of embracing diversity and celebrating one’s roots.

With his commitment to spreading positivity and kindness, the sneaker line is sure to leave a lasting impression on fashion lovers everywhere.
