Bishop Dr. David Teboho Thakadu Ramela’s 60th birthday celebration turned into a powerful reflection on social issues and leadership. Held on February 16th in Molotsane, Soweto, the star-studded thanksgiving event brought together faith, leadership, and sports in a remarkable display of gratitude and unity.
Distinguished guests included prominent figures like Hon. Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF); Hon. Motlatsi Maqelepo, Lesotho’s Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, and Sports; former Kaizer Chiefs icon Scara Thindwa; Nyakallo Ba2cada Leine; and Moruti Maine.
Maqelepo extended Lesotho’s gratitude for the invitation and lauded Bishop Ramela for his tireless efforts that have left an indelible mark on education, agriculture, sports, and culture in Lesotho. He also called for ongoing peace and collaboration between South Africa and Lesotho, emphasizing that the future of the two nations is intertwined.
In his keynote speech, Julius Malema echoed these sentiments, advocating for unity between South Africa and Lesotho. He addressed pressing societal challenges, including poverty, crime, drug abuse, and unemployment, urging the church to take a stand against alcohol advertisements that glamorize destructive behaviors.
Malema praised the church’s historic role in providing hope and sanctuary during the fight against apartheid, calling for its continued involvement in addressing the moral and ethical challenges facing the country. He stressed that South Africa is in a state of crisis, urging the church to lead the way towards hope and dignity.
Drawing comparisons to international political figures, Malema criticized global powers for attempting to silence those fighting for justice, even embracing the label of “international criminal” in his fight for land expropriation and dignity for South Africa’s people.
“We need to share the land and build a future where black and white can coexist peacefully,” Malema concluded, reaffirming the importance of faith and unity in the nation’s path forward.
