By Thapelo Moeketsi: Thabang Sefali, a Mafeteng-born DJ, is making significant strides in the entertainment industry. Known for his versatile playlists and engaging performances, Sefali has cemented his place in the deejaying world, recently earning a coveted spot on the Vodacom All White Fashion Festival line-up.
Through his passion for music, Sefali discovered his niche by delivering unforgettable performances across multiple genres, including Hip-hop, Nigerian music, and R&B. While acknowledging the popularity of Amapiano, he said he chooses to play it selectively based on his audience, ensuring he maintains a unique musical identity.
Speaking to the Weekly Observer, Sefali expressed his joy and disbelief at being included in the festival. “When I got the call bearing the good news, I burst into absolute tears,” he said. “It feels so surreal—a whole me sharing the stage with renowned artists like Mawhoo and Focalistic. What a great feeling.
Sefali highlighted the significant impact of social media in building his brand, crediting platforms for showcasing his talent through creative reels of his performances. “The festival organizers saw my impressive work on social media and didn’t hesitate to contact me,” he revealed. After inquiring about his booking fees, the deal was sealed, marking a major milestone in his career.
Sefali’s deejaying journey began during his primary school days with Virtual DJ software, but his career took off when he moved to Maseru for undergraduate studies. Starting with gigs in public bars and small events, he transitioned to clubs, where he honed his craft and introduced a unique DJ style called “Mega Mic,” setting him apart from his peers.
His notable bookings include performances at the Limkokwing University Fresher’s Ball and the Cooler Box Picnic, events that expanded his audience and solidified his reputation. Despite his success, Sefali remains focused on growth. “There are still areas I need to improve on to secure more bookings,” he admitted.
Looking ahead, Sefali has his sights set on international opportunities. “All I want is to be booked internationally,” he shared. “Those international bookings will be attained through hard work, and I’m ready for it.” He also dreams of organizing an event to promote and scout for local talent, giving back to the industry that nurtured him.
Sefali draws inspiration from industry giants like Kyotic from South Africa and DJ Warrys. With their influence and his unwavering determination, he aims to leave a lasting impact on the music scene.
