In collaboration with Selomo sa Basotho, an annual event that celebrates Basotho arts and culture through food, music, games, and traditional identity, DAEMAN. is adding youth audiences and participation into the mix.
This partnership aims to infuse a youthful energy into the celebrations, ensuring that the vibrant culture of Basotho is passed on to the next generation and appreciated by a wider audience.
Originally a group of five founders and artists in their own respect, Khethisi Motsiba (Lu Srenk), Tumelo Mosoeu, Lungile Matutoane, Phoka Manyatsa (Styles), and Retselisitsoe Nthaha (Kong), have welcomed two new female members who are yet to be announced.
This expansion is a testament to DAEMAN.’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity, reflecting a broader representation within the creative community.
DAEMAN. is a company that hosts weekly gathering for individuals in creative spaces, offering a relaxed environment to embrace individual differences, unwind, network, and enjoy surprise performances from local artists.
These gatherings have become a cornerstone for many creatives, providing a space where they can share ideas, collaborate and inspire one another.
Hosted at Big 6, a restaurant in Moshoeshoe 2, their weekly events called “Hear Me Out” also features board games such as chess, snakes and ladders, and others.
This addition of games not only enhances the social atmosphere but also encourages strategic thinking and friendly competition among attendees.
Khethisi Motsiba, popularly known by his stage name Lu Srenk, shared that the initiative has succeeded through their diverse and multi-talented youth following. “DAEMAN. is bringing the youth element into it and showcases the perspectives of Basotho in the art and entertainment space,” he said.
The youthful energy and innovative ideas brought by the attendees have been pivotal in shaping the unique identity of DAEMAN..
The team aims to give a platform to fellow creatives to express themselves in the DAEMAN. way. “You are who you think you are, and if you think you deserve to be heard and celebrated as a Mosotho, this is the platform to celebrate your roots and heritage,” he added.
This philosophy underscores the importance of self-expression and cultural pride, encouraging participants to embrace their identities fully.
The event will be held at Thaba Busiu ‘Melesi Lodge on August 3, where attendees can expect traditional food, displays, and performances from a local lineup featuring Ntate Stunna, Morena Sway, and Omali Themba. This lineup promises to deliver an unforgettable experience, showcasing the best of Basotho talent and tradition.
To promote the upcoming event, DAEMAN. recently held a themed session called ‘Kobo,’ where attendees wore traditional Basotho blankets. This theme not only highlighted the beauty of traditional attire but also fostered a sense of unity and pride among participants.
Additionally, the team initiated a social media campaign challenge called ‘Thella Hee,’ where musicians submit short videos rapping their clan names, known as ‘Ho ithoka.’ This innovative challenge has garnered significant attention, celebrating the rich heritage and unique identities of the Basotho people.
“We came up with an innovative way for artists to embrace their clan names in a rap form,” said Lu Srenk.
This creative approach has resonated with many, adding a modern twist to traditional practices and making cultural heritage more accessible to the younger generation.
Through these efforts, DAEMAN continues to bridge the gap between tradition and contemporary culture, ensuring that the legacy of Basotho arts and culture thrives for years to come.
